Program Title:
Michigan Sea Grant Research Program
Description:
This is a research program impacting Michigan communities. It is for informational purposes only unless otherwise specified in the program description.
Current coastal resource issues define Michigan Sea Grant's research agenda. Projects promote effective natural resource management through a multidisciplinary approach to complex environmental challenges - often called "wicked" problems.
Researchers collaborate directly with policy-makers and community leaders to define the environmental problem and identify the type of information needed to guide decision-making.
Each research project involves one or more Sea Grant outreach specialist. With long-standing community relationships, Sea Grant specialists help connect researchers with relevant stakeholders, including policy-makers, state agencies, environmental organizations, and local citizens.
Rather than running additional experiments, research teams summarize what is known and go a step beyond the facts to offer an assessment of those facts. Research projects integrate:
- Policy-makers
- Stakeholders (community and business leaders)
- Knowledge from several disciplines (e.g., physical, biological, and social sciences)
- Analysis of the causes and possible responses to a problem
Research projects are funded through a competitive, peer-reviewed process, with a biennial call for proposals. Researchers from any accredited University in the state of Michigan are eligible to apply as a Principal Investigator. However, project teams are not limited to university researchers or Michigan residents.
