Program Title:
Program in Manufacturing (PIM)
Description:
The Program in Manufacturing (PIM) was established at the College of Engineering (CoE) in January 1993 at the University of Michigan to enhance and coordinate education, research, and service activities in the area of manufacturing. PIM coordinates interdisciplinary manufacturing related activities within the CoE, and serves as a contact point and liaison to organizations outside of the CoE (e.g. industry, national and international professional organizations, government organizations, the University, etc.). The College of Engineering has roughly 300 faculty of which 50 have identified manufacturing as a primary area of interest in their teaching, research and service activities. (Please see our web site using the link below for more detailed information on faculty experts as well as seminars and conferences offered.)
PIM's goal is to establish and administer an interdisciplinary CoE degree program in manufacturing which will help upgrade the capabilities and status of manufacturing engineers in industry. The Program in Manufacturing prepares engineers to improve the quality and efficiency of manufacturing systems by giving them advanced skills in their engineering discipline, breadth across engineering disciplines, and an understanding of the complete product development and manufacturing process including its management. It offers graduate studies leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering in Manufacturing and Doctor of Engineering in Manufacturing. A joint Master of Engineering in Manufacturing and Master of Business Administration degree is also available. Over 80 courses in the College of Engineering from eight departments, have been cross-listed as manufacturing courses. PIM students also take typically about 20% of their courses in the UM School of Business Administration.
The importance given to manufacturing at the College is reflected by its new innovative organizational structure. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, the Director is a faculty member interested in manufacturing. The Director is assisted by the Manufacturing Council which is composed of manufacturing faculty who represent the eight departments involved in manufacturing activities at the College.
