Focusing on Musicianship in the Teaching of Brass
Description:
The workshop is designed to provide participants with the skills to model and work effectively with students on brass instruments in group beginning instrumental music classes. In addition, students will gain knowledge and skills for rehearsing large groups of brass instrumentalists in secondary ensemble settings.
Topics covered include: musical readiness for brass instruction; basics of group music instruction; basic instrument playing positions; breathing; tone production; articulation; common problems of beginners; techniques for more advanced students (multiple tonguing; muting, vibrato); overview of common methods books and solo literature; basic characteristics of instruments in the secondary ensemble settings; and choosing repertoire with the brass
TIME:Monday - Thursday: 2:00 - 7:30 pm
Friday: 10:30 - 4:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Colleen Conway
Workshops may be taken for graduate credit (NCFD), Continuing Education Units (CEU), or for personal enrichment without college credit.
